Research Being undertaken:
Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia:
. NINDS supports research on the genetic disorders such as HSP, many of the 30 genes
which are responsible for the several causes of HSP have been identified and many more
will likely be identified in the future.
. These genes are usually encoding proteins which would normally help maintain the function
of axons in the spinal cord. When the understanding of how these mutations of these genes
cause HSP it should lead to ways to prevent, treat and hopefully cure HSP.
